In the framework of an interpretive public spaces course, this memorial is a personal interpretation of Rachel Carson's legacy. With her undeniable writing talent, this American biologist became the voice of nature, to warn us about all the damages done by human ignorance. Her voice provoked a storm of objections, but she was also joined by thousands of other voices, for the sake of biodiversity.
The intended environment for the life-size memorial is the île Saint-Hélène, close to Jean-Drapeau metro station.
The monument of 10 meters high has two main parts. A stainless-steel tube, Rachel Carson's voice, emerges from the ground and is joined by more and more voices: the six other tubes. Together, the voices sing as the wind blows. Like the thousands of people, inspired by the biologist, who still raise their voices in the name of biodiversity. The second part is the steel twist representing the tornado of dissenters. Over time, this section will be invaded by nature or, more specifically, covered by Boston Ivy (Parthenocissus tricuspidata). The plant grows, clinging itself to the tornado so it keeps its original shape. Besides, the Boston Ivy attracts small birds by providing food and shelter.
The sculpture is hand-carved and formed.
